Background
|
The Maidenhead Interfaith group has decided to respond to the Tsunami disaster by providing tangible help.
Aims
Our objective is to provide long-term help for a village in Thailand and another in Sri Lanka, devastated by the Tsunami. We recognise our limitations and plan to provide only such as help we are able to achieve in practice.
One key requirement of any help we provide is that : a) we are sure the help is needed, b) that we do not take on commitments we can not fulfil and c) that we confirm any help we do provide is received by the intended recipient.
Help
We are currently working on two areas to help the Villages. At present, the help required is immediate and entirely basic. The Villages have nowhere to live.
We are raising funds for the Villages. Our target for funds is 20,000, which should provide permanent housing for around 10% of the Villagers.
We are also trying to organise a group of people from Maidenhead to visit the area as voluntary labourers, to help the Villagers build houses, sanitation, roads etc. Our focus is to encourage school leavers to go to the Village to help. It should be an invaluable experience for the volunteers, and a life-changing event for the Villagers.
